Istokpoga Park lies between Sebring and Lorida on Florida Hwy 98. This is a small park worth a quick stop if you are in the area and want a pretty place to stretch your legs.
When entering the park say hello to the rescued horses in the pasture and watch for crested caracaras. Osprey often nest at the head of the parking lot. Catbirds and cardinals can be seen in the cypress trees.
A stroll along the boardwalk that sits opposite the boat launch can yield a score of wading birds like anhinga, egret, limpkin, and heron. Further out in the lake wintering ducks may be seen. Dragonflies are a plenty and make for an interesting photographic challenge.
If you decide to take the back roads (Hwy 27) through the center of the state to get to your “real” location, Lake Istokpoga can make for a nice break.
